Kitchener Cycling Contacts

Question: Who do I call if I have an issue with snow removal at bike trail intersections with city streets?

Answer: The Operations section of the Roads department handles calls about plowing and snow removal (741-2514). Intersections & sidewalks are a lower priority and are dealt with after roads are cleared. Multi-use paths are the lowest priority. But if snow is still a problem 3-4 days after the snowfall, call the department with the problem intersection. The trails through Victoria Park specifically are handled at 741-2557, but issues with the Iron Horse Trail should be directed to 741-2514.

Question: Would this contact be the same if there are issues with general maintenance of the trails and paths in the summer months?

Answer: Yes, again Victoria Park is 741-2557 and Iron Horse Trail is 741-2514.

Question: Does the City of Waterloo have any policy on clearing snow from the Bike lanes on city streets?

Answer: Bike lanes are cleared when roads are ploughed. If you have a concern please contact our general number at 741-2514 and your concern will be investigated.

Question: Does the City have any procedure to request Bike racks or similar facilities in public areas?

Answer: Contact us at 741-2514 and a supervisor will go and assess the area.

Question: Is there any policy/bylaw about cars being parked in the bike lanes?

Answer: Most Bike lanes are signed No Parking. If there is a car in the bike lane, call By-Law Enforcement at 741-2330 and they will go investigate. For after-hours, pick "Parking Enforcement" on the voice mail. This is checked regularly throughout the night. Provide the address the car is parked in front of and the licence plate, if possible.

Question: Who would I contact if I wanted to request a curb cut at the entrance to a community path/trail?

Answer: The Operations section of the roads department (741-2514). A supervisor will investigate.

Question: Who is the person to contact about having bike lanes added / marked on City streets (i.e roads that are not maintained by the Region of Waterloo)?

Answer: The City of Kitchener adopted the Kitchener Bikeways Study in April 1998 and several lanes included in this plan have not been built yet. For additional requests, contact John McBride or Ken Carmichael at the Traffic Dept (741-2372). For off-road suggestions, contact Peter Whetherup, Parks Planner at 741-2557.
