Question: Does the City have any policy on clearing snow from the Bike lanes on city streets?
Answer: No, bike lanes are considered part of the road and are cleared based on priorities for road clearing established by the Public Works Department.
Question: Does the City have any procedure to request Bike racks or similar facilities in public areas?
Answer: No, other than through complaint or inquiry format - by contacting the City. The City attempts to incorporate bike racks in any new developments where they are warranted and budgets allow.
Question: Is there any policy/bylaw about cars being parked in the bike lanes?
Answer: Our current traffic and parking by-law, including the Region's traffic and parking by-law which is virtually identical, does not include a section on designating bikelanes. In the future, when consolidating the traffic and parking by-laws, the intent is to designate bikelanes in a schedule to the by-law. However, our traffic and parking by-law includes No Parking Anytime on those sides of roadways that are on the same side as painted bikelanes. So if a vehicle is parking in/on a bikelane, they would be ticketed for being in violation of parking in a prohibited parking area. They would not be ticketed for parking on/in a bikelane.
Question: Who would I contact if I wanted to request a curb cut at the entrance to a community path/trail?
Answer: Contact the Community Services Department 740-4681 - and ask for the Co-ordinator of Design and Development (Alex Koch - ext. 4561) who is the staff liaison for the Cambridge Trails Advisory Committee.
Question: Who is the person to contact about having bike lanes added / marked on City streets (i.e roads that are not maintained by the Region of Waterloo)?
Answer: Contact either the Director of Engineering Services (Kirit Patel) at 740- 4684 ext. 4544; or the Construction Engineer (Nicholas Bayley) at 740-4684 ext. 4616.
Trail and On-road Cycling Committees
Answer: Off road trails and on-road biking are part of the mandate of the Cambridge Trails Advisory Committee - an advisory committee comprised of citizens appointed by Council, a Councilor and city staff; which makes recommendations to council on trails and bikeways. The Trails Committee is under the direction of the Community Services Department and deals primarily with off-road trails.
A few years ago, the Cambridge On-Road Cycling Focus Group was created by the Trails Committee/Council to deal with on-road cycling matters under the direction of the Engineering division of the Transportation and Public Works Department.
