Students Against Animal Cruelty

*note SAAC was formerly The Centre for Compassionate Living

Animals are abused physically and mentally in homes, laboratories, circuses, rodeos, farms and even in the wild. This action group works with the public, government, industry, the scientific community, educators and the media to put an end to animal exploitation and suffering. The objective of the Students Against Animal Cruelty is to promote compassion and humane treatment for all animals through public education and legislative initiatives.

  • Animal Agriculture - SAAC educates the public about the cruelty inherent in meat, dairy, and egg production and consumption while monitoring the effects of biotechnology on farm animals. We also promote a compassionate diet and lifestyle.
  • Animal Experimentation - SAAC advocates greater accountability from the research community for its use of animals and tax dollars. We encourage the development and implementation of humane alternatives in research, teaching and testing.
  • Animals in Entertainment - We oppose the use of animals in all forms of entertainment that may cause them to suffer. We have worked with municipal governments to ban the use of animals in circuses, novelty acts, and rodeos.
  • Companion Animals - SAAC has worked with local governments to develop spay-neuter programs to reduce the tragic overpopulation of companion animals. We have worked to regulate the sale of pets, and to prohibit the sale and keeping of wild or exotic animals.
  • Animals in the Wild - SAAC is working to end the cruelty of the commercial seal hunt (see www.canadasealhunt.ca) along Canada's East Coast. We support the recent decision of the Ontario Government to end the hunting of bears in the spring. We continue our commitment to exposing the cruelty inherent in the trapping of animals and their intensive confinement on fur farms.
