Internet Collective

The Internet Collective develops and maintains computer resources in support of WPIRG and the broader community. Members take care of in-office computer equipment, assist in maintaining WPIRG servers, and develop web tools including this website and CommunityEvents.

Joining the Internet Collective is a great way to combine your interests in computers with social and environmental justice. Past Internet Collective members have gone on to work for a variety of innovative socially-aware organizations. One Internet Collective project even spun off into its own company!

How to Help

People of all skill levels -- from newbie to guru -- are welcome to join the Internet Collective. You can drop by one of our weekly meetings advertised on CommunityEvents, or send e-mail to the WPIRG address at the bottom of this page to express your interest. Don't be shy! There is something for everybody to do, and we all learn from each other.

Activities

Here are a few of the things the Internet Collective has lined up for this term. Depending on volunteer availability, we can take on other tasks as well.

  • Evaluating alternatives for the WPIRG library, including open source packages and migration to TRELLIS.
  • Continuing to develop and polish the CommunityEvents site, including adding Atom feeds, mailouts, and integration with other events sites.
  • Supporting other projects and action groups with their computer needs. If there is interest we can hold some training sessions on office software, poster design, or other topics of interest.
  • Continuing to work on backups, printing, and our in-office development infrastructure.
