He is the recipient of 35 international awards for his films, including 4 Geminis, a Genie and several Gold and Silver Hugos. Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire, his documentary based on Dallaire's best-selling book, recently won an Emmy for Best Documentary.
His career has taken him to the High Arctic, Nicaragua, Rwanda, India, Ethiopia and across North America and Europe. He started out working on the National Film Board of Canada and went on to establish an independent film company with his late wife Lindalee Tracey, a well-established filmmaker and author in her own right.
From taking on Union Carbide's operations in India, international inaction in the Rwandan genocide and Indigenous issues in Canada, a passion for human rights and social justice is clear in Raymont's work.
As a documentary filmmaker, he has revealed the hidden truths in politics, social and environmental disasters, media and big business.
Peter Raymont will be reflecting on his career of documenting struggles for justice around the world and the use of film as a tool for bringing to light human rights abuses.
Raymont will be speaking Friday, November 2nd at 7:30 pm in the Humanities Theatre. There is no cost for admission.
